SPC Publishing (an imprint of The School Planner Company) has announced the release of their inaugural resource pack - "Infection Control Guidance for Secondary Schools"
Overview of the Resource Pack This pack provides invaluable guidance, enabling schools to develop effective policies and procedures that will help protect staff and pupils from contracting and spreading infectious diseases within the school setting.
Is your school prepared for an outbreak? Infection control is high on the school agenda following the tragic consequences of an E. coli outbreak in Wales along with the high media interest surrounding outbreaks in hospitals and other large organisations. While the response to outbreaks by public health officials has been praised, we believe schools must take a proactive approach to infection control by embedding good hygiene practices in the school community.
Who is it for? The handbook is designed to help school communities quickly and easily embed good, preventative practices at all levels. On a day-to-day basis, absences should be reduced through these proactive measures. Ultimately though, the school can have confidence that the risk of potentially life-threatening outbreaks is being well managed.
Implementing and teaching pupils good hygiene practices thus plays a major role in the education system. It helps to protect pupils' health, reduce absenteeism and ensures pupils know how to protect themselves from infectious diseases throughout the rest of their lives. The handbook urges schools to teach their pupils basic hygiene skills, such as hand washing, and to encourage pupils to use these skills throughout the school day.
"I recommend that all secondary schools obtain a copy of this handbook for use by head teachers and staff involved in formulating and implementing infection control policies and procedures in schools. Health protection and infection control professionals should also familiarise themselves with the content, thus allowing collaborative working with Local Education Authorities and school staff."
